Flickr photo of the day: Patagonian morning

Michael Clemmer

In the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, high in the Andes, stands Monte Fitz Roy. Argentine explorer and academic Francisco Moreno discovered the 11,000-foot mountain in 1877 and named it for Robert FitzRoy, captain of HMS Beagle. FitzRoy and passenger Charles Darwin explored and charted large parts of the Patagonian coast in 1834.

Argentine photographer and Catholic missionary/priest Artur Schodziński captured this iconic image at 8:24 a.m. on April 2, 2013. If you feel you’ve seen this mountain range before, it may have been in a clothing store. Yvon Chouinard chose it for the logo of his Patagonia line of clothing.
