The place is Douz, Tunisia, “The Door of The Sahara.” And Spanish photographer Victoria Rivas is shooting from camelback. When we think of the Sahara we usually think of heat. In this image, captured in February 2012, her guide looks anything but hot. Wrapped in his kufeya (headscarf) and heavy jacket, he looks resigned to the trek ahead.
This image is an excellent example of a Point of View, or POV, photograph. Ms. Rivas, a physician when not photographing, is bundled against the cold and struggling to find a position that is both safe and comfortable. Camera in hand, she captured that “OH MY!” moment everyone has when first astride a camel.
