Vogue's First Blogger Cover Stars The Blonde Salad's Chiara Ferragni

When Eva Chen of Lucky magazine put a trio of bloggers—Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad, Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper Girl, and Zanita Whittington of Zanita Zanita—on the cover on the February 2015 issue, it wasn’t totally surprising. After all, the glossy is all but going digital and with a social media maven at the helm, it is playing host to a much younger audience. As of this morning, it looks like Vogue Spain was bit by the digital bug as well—Ferragni landed the fashion bible’s April 2015 cover.

Photographed by Nico Bustos—famed fashion photographer who’s worked with Claudia Schiffer, Salma Hayek, and Naomi Campbell—the cover features Ferragni with her hair in her face while wearing a nude dress under a belted military coat. She shared on The Blonde Salad: “I can’t really tell you how much I’m thrilled about it…” On stands March 20, the blogger previewed two more pics from the shoot. In one she’s draped in fur and surrounded by three elegant Afghan Hounds. In the other, she’s posing with messy hair and making a pucker-face in a crop top.

Ferragni’s cover is a big deal in the fashion-editorial world. For one, she isn’t sharing the space with anyone. She’s also the first blogger to be on a Vogue cover. Ever. Back in September, WWD reported that the blogger-designer was on track to generate revenue of almost $8 million—$2 million from her blog alone. Ferragni’s latest coup is just going to make her that much more visible and viable in the business world.

We can’t help but wonder: Has the editorial world exhausted its list of fashion folk and celebrities? Or is putting a blogger like Ferragni—who has 3.4 million Instagram followers—on the cover a calculated attempt to tap into her massive fan base? Either way, we’re watching.
