Harley Pasternak confirmed our feelings about Icelandic yogurt today . . . but also let us in on a secret: there are "fake healthy" yogurts in the grocery store.
He referenced Chobani and Fage "Greek style yogurts" as "a good way to go," because they're "strained and very low in lactose," - however, they "have a lot of sugar in the flavored versions." Harley said as many as 20 grams of sugar.
A better alternative, which you might already know by now, is Icelandic yogurt, also known as skyr. He called out Siggi's and skyr in general, saying it's "the lowest sugar flavored yogurt you're probably gonna find," with only 10 grams of sugar for anywhere between 14 and 16 grams of protein. It's still very low in lactose, and Harley says "if you're lactose intolerant, this is a great way to go."
Harley then moved on to sheep's milk Greek-style yogurt (he calls it "rare" but really healthy), and then the "fake healthy" section with dairy-free coconut and cashew yogurt - specifically Cocoyo and Forage. "Most of these are just fat and sugar," he said. He showed that the coconut yogurt had only 1 gram of protein, and the cashew yogurt had only 2. "Mainly fat, with a little bit of sugar."
His final thoughts? "Make sure you go with skyr." Unless you can't eat dairy, it's a solid option for a protein-packed snack.
