They’ve walked down the aisle, said “I do,” and sealed it with a kiss. Now it’s time to party! With so many guests but only two guests of honor, the newlyweds will be in high demand throughout the evening. So how much time should you spend with them at their wedding reception? Here’s some insight from our experts.

The biggest challenge when being invited to a friend’s wedding is finding the balance between seeing them enough to get to celebrate with them and letting them make the rounds and see the rest of their guests. It’s tempting to want to spend the night on the dance floor with your BFF, but when she’s the woman of the hour, you’re not the only one who wants to see her!
A good rule of thumb is to try to spend a few minutes with your friend two or three times throughout the night. After the ceremony, give her a quick hug and congratulations so she can see everyone else. Then, at cocktail hour, try to snag a couple minutes to chat. Bring her a drink if her hand is empty, grab her a snack (seriously, it’s hard for a bride to eat on her wedding day!), and talk for a few minutes. Then send her on her way!
During the dinner portion of the wedding reception, it’s better to try to let the couple eat when they have a moment. If they’re making the rounds between tables, let them know you’re having a great time, but if they’re having a seated dinner with no interruptions between courses, it’s better to stay in your seat and enjoy your meal. We promise they’ll be more fun on the dance floor if they’ve had some dinner!
Time to party! You should definitely try to dance a song with the bride and groom, especially if it’s nostalgic for you. Is the DJ playing that song you loved as freshmen in college or blasted during her bachelorette getaway? Go find the bride! But, again, try not to monopolize the happy couple: They’ve got a lot of people to see and will also want a little time to enjoy the celebration themselves!
