Benedict Cumberbatch Announces Engagement in the Newspaper Not a Tabloid

On Wednesday morning, collective hearts could be heard breaking around the world. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch announced his engagement to girlfriend Sophie Hunter. The incognito pair who have kept their relationship largely under wraps decided to break the news by posting a notice in The Times under “forthcoming marriages” on page 57.

The announcement reads: “Mr BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.”

The 38-year old actor has established a devoted fan base with his roles in Sherlock, The Hobbit, and more, with Oscar talk on the tips of the Academy’s tongues for his forthcoming portrayal in The Imitation Game. While his passionate followers, who call themselves the Cumberbitches, Cumberbabes or the Cumber Collective, will certainly be disappointed, the subtle way the internationally-known man decided to tell the world of his pending marriage is just another reason to admire him.

When celebrities sell their news to the highest tabloid bidder and others publicize their love on social media with a couples-themed hashtag, taking the old school route of daily print paper is pretty cool. So here’s to a happy marriage Mr BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter! I might be jealous but that won’t stop me from being polite and tipping my hat to the outdated yet sophisticated move.
