Beat Steakhouses at Their Own Game

Not everyone can swing a pricey steak dinner at The Palm or Morton’s on the regular, but that doesn’t mean carnivorous cravings must be ignored on an ordinary weeknight.

In the video above, Sarah Carey of Everyday Food demonstrates how to whip up a real-deal steakhouse meal without abandoning the comfort of your own kitchen.

Creamed spinach, a tomato-and-onion salad, and expertly seared flatiron steaks are all part of the equation. The best part? The spinach and meat cook quickly, and the salad doesn’t require cooking at all—the entire preparation clocks in at under 30 minutes.

For that steakhouse finish, Carey stresses that the steak pan should be very hot “so that the outside [of the meat] gets a nice sear before the interior overcooks.” Our two cents: Be sure to pat your steak dry before placing it in the hot pan—otherwise, it’ll wind up steaming instead of searing. As long as you have a top-notch steak knife on hand, you’re on track for an authentic (but super-manageable) steakhouse dinner.
