Viola Davis DGAF, and she proved that by wearing workout clothes to a Sirius XM appearance promoting her new film, Fences.

Davis participated in Sirius XM’s Town Hall with the rest of the cast and wore a black long-sleeve Under Armour shirt with thumb holes and black Under Armour leggings. Davis dressed up the outfit — sort of — with silver combat boots.

We know what you’re thinking — who cares? It’s just radio; no one’s really seeing her. But that’s not true. Sirius XM’s Town Hall sessions take place in front of live audiences, and Davis also took promotional photos with the cast. So yes, people did see this outfit. Of course, pro that she is, Davis knew that. It’s the fact that she still decided to rock her workout wear that makes us love her even more than we already did — if that’s even possible.

Maybe she’s the new Under Armour spokeswoman? Nah, we think either she decided to wear the most comfortable outfit in her closet or is coming from/going to a workout.

Of course, Davis could be making a bigger statement: She’s totally going against gender norms with this look. That’s because if a celebrity is ever underdressed, it’s usually the male. In Hollywood, women are pressured to go glam everywhere they go — and we love Davis for putting her combat booted foot down.

The contrast between how women and men in the entertainment industry are expected to dress for events was clearly demonstrated at this summer’s Comic-Con. Chris Pratt was in jeans and a black T-shirt, Michael B. Jordan wore a crewneck sweatshirt, and Ben Affleck sported sneakers, but their female counterparts were all dressed up. Brie Larson wore an emerald-green jumpsuit from Gabriela Hearst; Margot Robbie’s trench-coat dress from Monse with Louis Vuitton booties could have come straight off the runway; and Zendaya looked adorably overdressed in a Kenzo ensemble.

At the Fences event, it was the other way around — and we loved it. Davis was dressed down while her costars Russell Hornsby and Mykelti Williamson looked overdressed next to her. Hornsby wore a button-down shirt, tie, and slacks, while Williamson wore a blazer over a sweater.

Denzel Washington kept it casual but was still more formal that his leading lady in his gray sweater and black trousers.

Davis is known to push beauty boundaries; she once spoke out about the different hair standards black actresses have to face. “You’ll see a Caucasian lady walking into the scene with messed-up hair or after the shower with no makeup, and it’s not a big deal,” Davis told Essence. “It’s just her portraying that moment in time, but we don’t allow ourselves to do that.” And we’ll never forget that game-changing moment when she took off all her makeup on How to Get Away With Murder.

Despite her casual garb at the Sirius XM event, the award-winning actress looked glamorous from the neck up, sporting a loosely curled lob, crimson lipstick, and eyeliner.

We love Davis’s look — and the statement that goes with it.
