You know Chrissy Metz from her role as Barbara (aka Ima Wiggles) on American Horror Story: Freak Show, but for this character her plus-size figure was largely the focus. Sadly it’s been that way for many of her TV roles, and something’s gotta give.

Like every other plus-size performer, Metz deserves roles that are as complex and emotionally rich as those for sample-size actresses. It’s fair, simple, and obvious.

At the Television Critics Association Press Tour this week, Metz spoke out about this issue. “We need to write more of those stories. We need to not always be the butt of the joke.”

Her weight is not the main focus of her latest role in a new NBC dramedy called This is Us (from the writer and director of Crazy Stupid Love). Metz plays a character named Kate who is still struggling with some weight issues, though she’s given a love interest in the first episode.

Speaking about her new role, Metz said, “I feel incredibly lucky. I don’t know many plus-size women who are starring in a television show that is going to be seen by so many people who are affected by being overweight.”

Since the trailer was released into the world, positivity has been spreading. Fans have expressed their relief that her new role treats plus-size women with more respect. “I’ve already had people reaching out to me [about] the fact they’re addressing being plus-size or overweight and still being attractive.”

Metz is a great role model for other women who are struggling with body issues, because she doesn’t sugarcoat anything

She’s confident about who she is. “I teeter this line between I want to change, but I also really love myself. I look in the mirror, and I’m a plus-size girl, but I got it going on.” You do indeed, Chrissy!

Unfortunately we won’t be able to see This is Us until September 20th, but here’s the trailer.
