A Sneak Peek of My Upcoming Book—It's Juicy!

I am so excited to announce that my book, That’s What Fashion Is: Lessons and Stories From My Non-Stop, Mostly Glamorous Life in Style, is finally coming out this September. And I wanted to tell you about it first.

This fall also marks my 25th anniversary living in New York City, after arriving here from Toronto with my dad (and grandmother) in an Oldsmobile station wagon overloaded with mementos, college clothes and one of the first Mac green screen computers. I was on a mission: to become a fashion magazine editor.

From my early college days to my first time on the red carpet, it’s all documented in the book, which has been my passion project for the past two years. It’s been a fun ride: full of self-discovery as well as some cringe worthy moments—especially looking back at some old photos (um, high-waisted Jordache jeans anyone?). And while I’ve been able to celebrate all of the amazing milestones in my career (working with Tom Ford on the 2006 Vanity Fair Hollywood portfolio or appearing on shows like Gossip Girl and The City), I’ve also learned a lot about myself.

I discovered that I was a good multi-tasker, but that I also had a tendency to procrastinate. Somehow this combination worked because no matter what, I always got the job done—well. I also made myself say yes to everything— especially when it scared the shit out of me—and that allowed me to parlay my talents not into one or two jobs, but many jobs. Along the way, I earned the nickname Slashie because of my multi-tasking ways.

My nonstop career has left me with tons of funny (and some scary) stories and behind the scenes moments. And you’ll find it all here—from how my favorite covers at ELLE happened to the celeb I styled early on in my career who would eventually earn my title of Most Difficult. There’s the drama of the red carpet (how two of my clients ended up on the Best Dressed and Worst Dressed list in the same year, at the same event!) as well as the comedy of trying to convince a very pregnant Jessica Simpson to bare it all for a fashion shoot.

But all those stories (and more) aside, I think my favorite part about this book is the insider knowledge I have about this business. Consider me the guy who did all the leg work for you. I didn’t just become a fashion editor/stylist/designer/author/TV host/reality personality/accidental techie (aka #Slashie) without learning a thing or two along the way.

I hope you will love this book as much as I loved writing it.
