There’s two days to go before what André Leon Talley calls the Super Bowl of social fashion events: The Met Gala. On Monday, celebrities will turn up in avant-garde looks inspired by the legendary Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, in honor of the Met's 2017 exhibit “Rei Kawakubo/Commes Des Garçons: Art of the Inbetween.” Until then, take a look back at the 30 best dresses of yore, including everyone from Rihanna, Beyonce and—here's a bold choice—Kim Kardashian, to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen who always interpret the theme in the most thoughtful, chic ways, to Karlie Kloss, who had designer Brandon Maxwell cut her barely-there dress to the hip when it was time to step out for the after-parties. What will the red carpet look like when celebrities will be asked to interpret a designer known for keeping mum on the meaning of her designs and who other-worldy shapes creations? Only time will tell.
