Talk about hitting the jackpot (literally)! Two friends from Long Island, NY, won $8.3 million from playing four sets of Lotto Quick Picks on March 18. And get this, they only spent $2 to win it!
"I was in total denial," 63-year-old Randi Bernstein told The New York Daily News. "I thought, how could this be? And then there was a lot of crying." And reasonably so. Bernstein and her friend Elizabeth Kelly, 56, have been playing the lottery together for a few months now hoping for a win.
Bernstein said she always paid for the tickets and Kelly would be the one to check to see if they had won the next day. On March 19, their lucky day had arrived. The lotto drawing numbers 1, 3, 20, 27, 30 and 49 were an exact match of the six numbers Bernstein played the day before.
"You don't believe it," Kelly told the publication. "It's surreal. It's kind of impossible to wrap your head around," Bernstein added. Bernstein also revealed that she will put the money toward rebuilding her home, which was damaged by 2012's Hurricane Sandy. "Things have been rather difficult between Sandy and personal things, so it's very life-altering. This will make things a little easier to say the least. I'm very happy." As for Kelly, she said she hasn't figured out what she'll do with her cash.
The two friends have agreed to split the profits, which checks out as a total of $1.7 million a piece after taxes. Are you motivated to go play the lottery now?
