Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman tests positive for coronavirus, out for 'foreseeable future'

Another All-Star has tested positive for COVID-19.

On Saturday, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that closer Aroldis Chapman has tested positive. As a result, Chapman will not be around the team “for the foreseeable future.”

Chapman joins a growing list of stars to test positive. Some of the bigger names include Freddie Freeman, Salvador Perez, Miguel Sanó and Joey Gallo.

With opening day less than two weeks away, the Yankees will not be able to count on having Chapman available for the early portion of the 60-game schedule. Alternative plans are already being made.

In order to return, Chapman must produce two negative tests 24 hours apart.

The news adds to what has been a concerning day for Major League Baseball.

On Saturday morning, the Houston Astros canceled a full day’s worth of workouts after a staff member reported potential exposure to someone who is COVID-19 positive. The Kansas City Royals also announced that catcher Cam Gallagher tested positive after participating in Friday night’s intrasquad game at Kauffman Stadium.

On Friday, MLB announced there were 66 positive COVID-19 tests in the final wave of intake testing.
