WATCH: Texas commit Maalik Murphy leads team to section championship

With all the talk about who will be Texas’ quarterback next season, the answer to that question may be in Southern California.

Four-star quarterback Maalik Murphy is expected to come in and compete for what should be a very open quarterback position this offseason. He was once rated as the top quarterback in the nation, but lack of film and early struggles at the beginning of the season saw his ranking dip.

As we all know, rankings do not always mean everything, especially with a player like Murphy. He has untapped potential and just seems to be cut from a different cloth.

Unlike the typical athlete of today, Murphy stayed at his local high school rather than transfer to a powerhouse like the Mater Dei’s of the world, or even a school in Texas like many people were clamoring for. Instead, he stayed local and led his hometown school to glory.

Here are some highlights from Junipero Serra’s 31-3 win over Apple Valley High School on Saturday.

In his first full season as the starting quarterback, Murphy has led Junipero Serra High School to a South Section Division 3 Championship. An accomplishment that Murphy explained in an interview with SBLive Sports is something that is a first for all of the players on the roster.

Whether Murphy will be the starting quarterback at Texas next season is to be determined, but what we do know is that he has a strong arm and could develop into a program-changing player. The Longhorns got a good one in Murphy, and it seems as if the best is yet to come.

Murphy and his team will now turn their attention to winning a state championship.
