Dominic Demschar finished 8.71 seconds behind Marcel Hirscher in the giant slalom.

On Thursday, he and the Austrian gold medalist finished a little bit closer.

Actually, “finished” is the wrong word. Both men posted DNFs and skied out in the opening runs of the slalom event at the Winter Olympics after each hit an early gate.

In Demschar’s case, the gate couldn’t have been any earlier. The Park City, Utah, resident who races for Australia produced the ultimate “wanna getaway?” moment by straddling the first gate.

Though Demschar’s start was shocking, Hirscher’s run-in with the gate may have been even more surprising as NBC analyst Bode Miller called the violation “one of the biggest upsets of the games.”

Hirscher had previously won gold in the giant slalom and combined events and was the favorite in the slalom. But the Austrian hit a gate just over 20 seconds into his first run, ending his bid.
