Urban Meyer fuels coaching speculation by sitting in Dan Snyder's box at Washington game

Urban Meyer took in the Washington-Philadelphia Eagles game Sunday, and he may have been there as more than a fan. Meyer watched the game from Dan Synder’s luxury box. At least one media report says Washington wants Meyer to be its next coach.

Meyer, 55, retired from coaching Ohio State last December. He stepped down due to health reasons. Meyer joined Fox Sports shortly after his retirement, and has served as a college football analyst this season.

While Meyer has said this retirement could be permanent, people are hesitant to believe that. Meyer has taken time away from coaching and announced his retirement in the past, only to return to the sideline.

Meyer’s presence in the owner’s box Sunday will only add fuel to that fire. After a year away, Meyer could feel refreshed and up for a new challenge. Washington fired Jay Gruden in October, and has been rolling with Bill Callahan as the team’s interim head coach. Callahan has gone 3-5 since taking over for Gruden.

After the game — which Washington lost 37-27 — rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin shed some light on Meyer’s attendance. McLaurin, who has emerged as one of the team’s few standout offensive players and was coached by Meyer at Ohio State, invited him.

While Meyer has never coached in the NFL, Washington could still be a desirable spot for him. Washington’s future depends on Dwayne Haskins living up to his potential as a first-round draft pick. Meyer also coached Haskins at Ohio State.

Throughout his career, Meyer has maintained his status as one of the best college coaches in the game. He has won three national championships — two with the Florida Gators and one with Ohio State — and has developed a few first-round quarterbacks, including Haskins, Alex Smith and Tim Tebow.

Washington hasn’t been the most successful franchise in the NFL lately. The team has won the NFC East just twice in the past 20 seasons.

Finding a head coach who can get the most out of the team’s young stars would go a long way toward returning the franchise to relevance. Meyer already proved he could do that with Haskins and McLaurin at Ohio State.

Getting the band back together in the NFL could be the ideal move for everyone involved.
