Tim Tebow won't be getting September call-up from Mets after broken hand ends his season

It sounds like Tim Tebow won’t be getting that September call-up from the struggling New York Mets, but not because of his batting average. Tebow, currently in Double-A in the Mets organization, is likely done for the season after breaking the hamate bone in his right hand.

If you were readying yourself for the upcoming debate whether the Mets should go full sideshow and promote Tebow, it looks like fate has intervened. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tebow is having surgery Tuesday:

Were the Mets really going to call up Tim Tebow?

Maybe. Crazier things have happened — particularly to the Mets. This season in fact. Many of their stars are injured, whether it’s the mysterious saga of Yoenis Cespedes’ heel or ace Noah Syndergaard being the rare adult to catch a toddler’s illness.

The 2018 Mets — who are 40-56, the fewest wins in the NL — had seemed like the perfect place to see how The Tebow Experiment would work in the big leagues, but even that isn’t working out for the team this year.

How has Tim Tebow performed in the minor leagues?

For all the naysayers who said Tebow wouldn’t be able to cut it in pro baseball at age 30, he hasn’t been that bad. He hasn’t exactly been tearing up the minor leagues the last two seasons, but he hasn’t embarrassed himself either.

This season, Tebow is hitting .273/.336/.399 in Double-A with six homers and 36 RBIs. It was good enough to get him in the Double-A All-Star Game. In two seasons, he’s hitting .244/.319/.367. He has more strikeouts (229) than hits (171) and he’s homered 14 homers times in 210 games.
