Heavy overnight snow in the Martinsville area has forced the postponement of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup series race until Monday

Snow — yes, snow — has forced NASCAR to postpone Sunday’s Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway until Monday.

The Cup Series race will be run at 2 p.m. ET after the conclusion of the Camping World Truck Series race. The Truck race is set to resume at 11 a.m. ET. It completed 24 laps on Saturday before rain and snow hit the track.

The half-mile track was covered in snow Saturday night as a storm system hit Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

While the track could have been ready if precipitation had stopped, there were other factors at play as well. Fans would be having to drive through snow to get to the track and authorities usually assigned to a race weekend would potentially be needed in other parts of Virginia. And Martinsville’s fan parking is largely done on grass hills. That’s a recipe for disaster on a snowy and muddy hill.

The race is a week earlier than normal in 2018 because of the Easter holiday. Easter, which is April 1, is traditionally a NASCAR off weekend.
