Rudy Gay gives Spurs win with buzzer-beater, but Gregg Popovich wasn't happy after game

Rudy Gay didn’t have a huge game for the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, but he rose to the occasion when it mattered. With the game tied, the Spurs gave the ball to Gay with just 13 seconds left on the clock and asked him to deliver.

Gay took his time before getting off the shot. He held the ball near halfcourt until there was about six seconds left on the clock. Gay dribbled to his left, got a defensive matchup he liked and pulled up from just inside the 3-point line. He drained the shot as time expired, giving the Spurs a 126-124 win over the Phoenix Suns. Gay finished the contest with 16 points.

While the Spurs came away with a win, one key member of the organization didn’t seem too happy about it. After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich said the Spurs were “lucky to win the game” before eventually saying he thought “Phoenix got robbed.”

With the win, the Spurs improved to 30-22 on the season. They now sit in the sixth spot in the Western Conference after a three-game winning streak. They’ll look to extend that streak against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday.

For the Suns, the loss couldn’t have come at a worse time. Phoenix came into the contest on an eight-game losing streak. For a team that has been struggling lately, Gay’s clutch game-winner had to hurt. The loss drops the Suns to 11-41 on the year. The team will try to stop that streak from entering double-digits when it takes on the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.
