Ron Rivera says that he ‘saw enough’ of Dwayne Haskins as a QB1 in Washington
One of the biggest criticisms around the NFL world that Washington head coach Ron Rivera was facing last week was the fact that he benched starting QB Dwayne Haskins after just four weeks of the 2020 season, ending his run at the man in charge with just 11 NFL starts under his belt. Many thought that this was way too soon, and Rivera should have given the second-year QB more time to prove himself as the guy going forward.
Rivera disagrees with that notion.
“I saw enough. For 11 weeks he was our starter,” Rivera said via NBC Sports Washington. “It’s interesting because we went through training camp and gave him every rep with the [first team] in terms of trying to develop him and get him ready to go. Through the four games, we didn’t see what we were looking for. I made the decision to go forward with Kyle [Allen] and Alex [Smith].”
It’s hard to argue with a person that seems so matter of fact with their answer, but you have to at least appreciate that Rivera is holding true to his decision. Had Haskins been given more time to develop as a quarterback and gain experience on the field, there’s a chance that he could have grown into a legitimate franchise QB in Washington, but it’s clear that Rivera is not beholden to him as a guy that was drafted before his time with the franchise.
We don’t know what will happen with Haskins as we go on from here, but it seems pretty apparent that his time in Washington is all but over.
