Robert Griffin III hoping for a call from Texans, or anyone

Five years ago, four quarterbacks stormed the NFL simultaneously, and appeared poised to rework the league in their image. It hasn’t quite worked out that way.

Russell Wilson is still playing at the top of his game, yes. But Andrew Luck is injured for the foreseeable future. Colin Kaepernick … well, you know. And the fourth? He’s sitting by the phone, waiting for a call that might never come.

Robert Griffin III, once hailed as the savior of the Washington Redskins and now an out-of-work ex-QB, still harbors fantasies of getting back in the game. He recently spoke to the Houston Chronicle, and still wants to play quarterback in the NFL once again.

Griffin, like the rest of the NFL world, has noticed the revolving door of quarterbacks coming and going as injury and incompetence run rampant among signal-callers. And with Texans star-in-waiting Deshaun Watson out for the year, Griffin says he might be able to play a role in Houston.

“I feel like I could help the team,” he said. “I know a lot of their guys. I think I can do a lot of things they’ve been doing offensively. Texas is home, and I’ve always got a soft spot in my heart for Texas.”

Griffin had been pegged as the next great NFL star when injuries in Washington hobbled his career and battles with coaches and teammates effectively killed it. He attempted a comeback with Cleveland last year, but couldn’t stick with the Browns.

He further noted that he doesn’t begrudge Kaepernick for getting attention every time that a job opens up, even though Kaepernick’s political stances have rendered him radioactive: “I think he’s become a martyr for social injustice and some of the things going on in this country and around the world. A quarterback goes down, and he’s the first one mentioned? I sure don’t take that personally.”

Griffin, who lives in South Florida, says he’s been training both on the field and the film room, working diligently toward a return.

“When my number’s called,” he said, “I’ll be ready.”
