Rich Eisen trolls Ohio State player in live interview

When it comes to famous alums, Michigan has plenty. But one who has been prominent that’s in current media is Rich Eisen, of NFL Network and Peacock fame, and formerly a SportsCenter legend on ESPN.

On his Peacock show, The Rich Eisen Show, Eisen interviewed anticipated first-round pick Garrett Wilson, the wide receiver from Ohio State. While the interview was a respectful back-and-forth and Eisen clearly took a liking to Wilson, the Wolverine couldn’t help razzing the Buckeye.

As the duo discussed Wilson’s draft prospects, the former OSU standout shared that Detroit was a team he had met with, and that led Eisen to all sorts of ideas.

“Would you have a problem playing in the state of Michigan, Garrett?” Eisen asked.

“No. The rivalry is only one week of the season, (Week 13),” Wilson said. “We live it out always. I don’t really like the team up north, but I’ve gotta help my team out and if I was in Detroit, that doesn’t change anything.”

“What state is Detroit in, Garrett? What state is Detroit in?”

“I forget! I can never really get it! I don’t remember. I just know Detroit.”

“If you do play there, Garrett, you’re gonna have to write your name and address down somewhere! You’re not gonna put a red X on your paperwork, are you?”

Wilson said that he would be putting an X through the M in Michigan the week that Ohio State plays the Wolverines, but every other week, he wouldn’t.

But, it gets better.

After that repartee, Wilson got wise to what Eisen was doing and called him out for being an alum of the University of Michigan, to which, Eisen couldn’t help but wish that he would end up playing for the Lions, just so he’d have to deal with having to live in the state which has a name he refuses to say.

“I know you went to the team up north!” Wilson said. “I know you’ve got the bragging rights for 365!”

“Oh, I’m sitting up in my chair right now, Garrett, that’s for sure,” Eisen said. “I have no problem saying Ohio State, I have no problem writing the letter. I’m cool with it. I just don’t understand this ‘team up north’ thing, and can’t write the letter M.”

Wilson was fine with that, he notes, saying: “All jokes aside, it’s a great state.”

While it seemed to be mostly harmless banter, Eisen got the upper hand of the exchange when Wilson was departing the show, as he said, “Thank you, Mr. Eisen.”

That salutation was one that Eisen took objection to, and he gave Wilson two options to use instead.

“It’s Rich — or, based on last November — your father!” Eisen said. “Was that wrong?”

Classic.

Of course, it was all in good fun, and for the first time in a long time, Michigan fans can talk all they want.
