Reports: NaVorro Bowman to sign with Raiders

The Oakland Raiders are adding a veteran presence to their defense, as they will sign inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman to a one-year deal.

NFL Network and ESPN have both reported that Bowman, who was surprisingly shopped and then cut by the San Francisco 49ers last week, has agreed to the $3 million pact.

A four-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler, Bowman had asked for a trade last week, but it didn’t happen when it didn’t work out as Bowman wanted. So he requested to be released, and general manager John Lynch granted the request.

It’s rare that a player of Bowman’s caliber is available at this point in the season – he was an All-Pro as recently as 2015, when he had a league-leading 154 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 16 starts – and the Raiders jumped at the chance to sign him. Bowman only played in four games last season, suffering a torn Achilles on Oct. 3, but had started San Francisco’s first five games this year, credited with 37 total tackles.

Bowman was going to visit the Dallas Cowboys after the Raiders, but canceled the trip.

The 91st overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Penn State, the 29-year old joins an Oakland team that is trying to right the ship. An AFC favorite at the start of the season, the Raiders are 2-4 after losing four straight and are in last place in the AFC West.
