Raiders blow 13-point lead to Jaguars as errors, controversy mar final home game at Oakland Coliseum

For most of Sunday afternoon, the Raiders looked ready to deliver a win in the final game at the Oakland Coliseum.

Instead, they allowed 17 unanswered points to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a stunning 20-16 loss that came with controversy and missed kicks in the game’s final minutes.

The Raiders allowed 10 unanswered points after taking a 16-3 halftime lead, but had a chance to close out the game with a late drive. Quarterback Derek Carr scrambled for a first down at the Jaguars’ 31-yard line before giving himself up as the clock ticked toward the two-minute warning.

But officials stopped the clock at 2:05, having incorrectly ruled that Carr slid out of bounds when his knee clearly hit the turf before he hit the boundary marker.

Raiders, refs both screw up

The Raiders, thinking the two-minute warning was approaching, allowed the play clock to run down, resulting in a delay-of-game penalty. Raiders coach Jon Gruden challenged the ruling, but was told by officials that the call was not eligible for review.

It was a collection of errors by both the Raiders and the officials that resulted in Oakland facing first-and-15 at the Jacksonville 36 with 2:05 remaining instead of first-and-10 at the 31 on the other side of the two-minute warning.

The Raiders failed to gain a first down, and Daniel Carlson missed a 50-yard field goal wide left on fourth down. When Jacksonville got flagged for running into the kicker, Carlson missed again with an almost identical kick from 45 yards that also sailed wide left.

Raiders fans mad

The Jaguars responded with a seven-play drive that ended with a Gardner Minshew touchdown throw to Chris Conley with 31 seconds remaining to complete a 17-0 run and prove to be a game winner when Carr’s Hail Mary as time ran out failed to connect in the end zone.

Carr walked off the field to a chorus of boos from angry fans after the disappointing finale.

For fans who stuck it out despite the team’s pending move to Las Vegas, it was a bitter defeat in the final game at the Oakland Coliseum.
