Patriots signing former first-round draft pick to practice squad

The New England Patriots are reportedly adding to their receivers room by signing former first-round draft pick Laquon Treadwell to their practice squad.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported the news on Monday.

Treadwell, who was selected with the No. 23 overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings, has now bounced around at four different locations. He never quite lived up to his draft stock, but he did prove himself to be more serviceable than expected during an impressive 2021 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

When catching passes from Trevor Lawrence, he hauled in 33 receptions for a career-high 434 receiving yards and one touchdown. He was actually the third-leading receiver in his first year with the team behind Marvin Jones and Laviska Shenault Jr.

The Patriots can use all of the help they can get with their receivers room once again facing question marks. Coach Bill Belichick spent a second-round draft pick on rookie Tyquan Thornton, who is currently out with a collarbone injury. He also went out and traded for DeVante Parker with the Miami Dolphins.

So there’s obviously ongoing work behind the scenes to fix the problem. We’ll see if Treadwell can build off his improved effort last season when catching passes from Mac Jones.

With the practice squad already full, another move must be coming for the Patriots.

Another player could be cut from the practice squad to make room for Treadwell, or there’s also the possibility that one of the practice squad players will be bumped to the opening spot on the 53-man roster left after Thornton was placed on injured reserve.
