Packers' Jamaal Williams: I'll retaliate for dirty plays
Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams had two carries against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Thursday night. On the second, he was taken down at the line of scrimmage by Steelers linebacker Vince Williams.
And Jamaal Williams alleges that Vince Williams intentionally twisted his ankle on the play, causing him to miss the rest of the game. Jamaal Williams said it was “most definitely” a dirty play.
While he doesn’t expect it to be much of a problem, Williams isn’t going to put up with things like that, either.
‘I’m for sure kicking’
Williams told ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky that he’ll retaliate the next time a tackler does what the Steelers’ Williams did.
“If they’re twisting ankles, I’m for sure kicking,” Williams said Monday. “I’m kicking from now on. If the ref asks why I’m kicking, I’ll be like, ‘Hey, they twisted the ankle.’
“I’m just going to do what I’ve got to do to survive honestly. I’m not trying to get hurt and not be able to play anymore because somebody wants to be aggressive and do dirty things like that. So why can I not protect myself from those type of injuries?”
That likely won’t work in Williams’ favor; often we see the player who retaliates receive the same penalty or the only penalty when they say another player instigated.
Trying not to get injured again
Williams is potentially Green Bay’s starting running back – he had 153 carries for 556 yards rushing and 818 total yards from scrimmage as a rookie last year – and said he doesn’t believe the ankle injury will keep him out of the regular-season opener.
“It wasn’t that bad but at the moment, it swelled up. I just need to get off it,” he said. “The next day the swelling went down and it just went from that to me just grinding it out, getting everything back together. It’s really just the swelling and the fluid build-up there. I’m all good, man. It’s just a football lesson you’ve got to learn from and just try not to get injured like that again.”
Williams said he needs to do a better job of keeping guys off his legs and will start kicking in the pile if he has to in order to prevent another incident like what he said Vince Williams did.
