Nine Hawkeyes named to Pro Football Focus’ 2023 preseason All-Big Ten Teams

The Iowa Hawkeyes have added quite a bit of talent this offseason and return even more. Their expectations are growing and that is right in line with what this team believes that they can do.

The talent is oozing and that is evident as nine members of the Hawkeyes, across the offense, defense, and special teams, were named to Pro Football Focus’ 2023 preseason All-Big Ten Teams.

Four are from the defense, three are from the offense, and Iowa swept both of the special teams spots on the first team. While these nine did get named, there are some glaring omissions as Luke Lachey, possibly the best returning tight end in the league, isn’t named to any team at all. Kaleb Johnson flashed as a freshman and expects to blossom even more but no mention of him either.

Defensively, Xavier Nwankpa could be the best safety in the Big Ten when the season is over but is absent. Jermari Harris, returning after injury last year, also seems to be getting dismissed.

Nonetheless, Iowa is very well-represented and will look to only expand on the nine individuals below that were named.

Connor Colby is going to be instrumental in Iowa returning to form in the ground game. After a step back in 2022, they will look to run the ball better and it starts up front with Colby who could be in for a big year.

There always seems to be one veteran in the Iowa secondary that steps up each year and Quinn Schulte has that opportunity. With a talented group alongside him, Schulte can play freely in the safety spot.

Cooper DeJean, Flex: First Team

Not only is Cooper DeJean rightfully a member of the first team, he could be the best defensive player in the conference. DeJean dares teams to throw his way but it remains to be seen who will test him in 2023.

Drew Stevens, K: First Team

Drew Stevens is truly a luxury for the Hawkeyes to call upon when they need points. After a great freshman year, Stevens is eyeing down the chance to become another special teams weapon for Iowa throughout his career.

Tory Taylor, P: First Team

Tory Taylor isn’t just the best punter in the Big Ten, he is the best punter in America. No other words need said.

Erick All, TE: Second Team

Our first new face on the list, Erick All came over with Cade McNamara from Michigan and is going to play an important part in reviving Iowa’s offense. His talent and athleticism are clear.

Mason Richman, T: Second Team

Along with Connor Colby, Mason Richman is a key cog to get this offensive line going. The returning talent is there for Iowa and the experience should be something they rely on to get going.

Nick Jackson, LB: Third Team

A newcomer after transferring in from Virginia, Nick Jackson has big shoes to fill after Jack Campbell left for the NFL. The ACC star is going to have every chance to make plays right away in a defense he fits into very well.

Sebastian Castro, Flex: Third Team

This is a name Hawkeyes’ fans should familiarize themselves with. Sebastian Castro doesn’t miss tackles and plays extremely physically. His playing style is built for the Big Ten and could be another defensive player from Iowa to his the scene.
