Nick Saban explains the challenge of defending Jayden Daniels, explosive LSU offense

LSU is on a bye this weekend as it prepares for what will likely be the most important game of the entire season.

The Tigers’ hopes of repeating as SEC West champions likely hinge on upsetting Alabama once again, this time on the road. LSU has had some issues defensively so far this season but has leaned heavily on an offense that is arguably the best in the entire country.

The Crimson Tide, which is strongest on the defensive side as it has a new starting quarterback in Jalen Milroe, has its work cut out for it entering this game.

Coach Nick Saban broke down the challenge of facing an electric LSU offense and quarterback in Jayden Daniels who is a very real Heisman candidate at the moment.

“We played against him last year,” Saban said on his radio show, per On3. “First of all, the guy is an outstanding athlete. He’s a dual-threat quarterback. He can run, he can make you miss, he can extend plays, and he’s a really good passer. And they have really good skill guys on offense.

“They have great balance on offense too. They run the ball effectively. They got a really good scheme in terms of how they use (Jayden Daniels) to create triple option-type plays that you have to defend — which really helps their running game. Not just because he can run but it helps their runners run because of the way you have to defend (Daniels) on the perimeter.”

LSU’s passing game has taken a major step forward with Daniels as well as receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. having breakout campaigns. Running back Logan Diggs has also been a major addition after Daniels had to shoulder much of the rushing load himself in 2022.

LSU has leaned on its offense all season, and it will do so once again as it faces its toughest defensive challenge so far against the Tide next weekend.
