Virginia Commonwealth basketball player Mo Alie-Cox to work out for NFL teams as tight end
Virginia Commonwealth forward Mo Alie-Cox is 6-foot-6 and a healthy 260 pounds. He hasn’t played organized football in years, but because of his combination of size and athleticism and the history of college basketball forwards transitioning to tight end, NFL teams are intrigued.
And Alie-Cox is willing to at least give it a shot.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the 23-year old has told teams that he will work out on April 11 as a tight end near Richmond, Virginia.
Alie-Cox hasn’t played football in nearly a decade; as a kid, he played tight end and defensive end, but when he transferred to Middleburg Academy after his freshman year, he had to drop the sport because the school didn’t have a team.
Alie-Cox’s scheduled workout is not an out-of-the-blue event; a Kansas City Chiefs scout reportedly attended a VCU practice early in the basketball season, and two years ago, after watching him play against Richmond, Jason Witten talked to Alie-Cox and told him he thought he had the skillset to give the NFL a shot.
“It crosses my mind from time to time, but I don’t really think about it too much,” Alie-Cox told HeroSports.com in December. “I know I still have a good amount of time here. I really want to focus on winning now, and getting to a second week in the NCAA tournament or another Final Four. The goals that are right in front of me have been the major focus.”
VCU did play in the NCAA tournament, but lost in the first round to Mount St. Mary’s. Alie-Cox averaged 7.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game for the season.
