Vin Scully to receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

There is one more fabulous honor coming the way of Vin Scully, the legendary Los Angeles Dodgers announcer. The White House announced Wednesday that Scully is one of 21 people who will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year.

Scully, 88, called his final game with the Dodgers in October after 67 years with the club. For that, he’s joining such famed Americans as Michael Jordan, Bruce Springsteen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Tom Hanks by getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation’s highest civilian honor — from President Obama on Nov. 22.

The purpose of the medal is to honor “individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” We’d say being the most recognizable play-by-play voice in the history of our National Pastime counts.

Here is the entire list of honorees:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Elouise Cobell
Ellen DeGeneres
Robert De Niro
Richard Garwin
Bill and Melinda Gates
Frank Gehry
Margaret H. Hamilton
Tom Hanks
Grace Hopper
Michael Jordan
Maya Lin
Lorne Michaels
Newt Minow
Eduardo Padron
Robert Redford
Diana Ross
Vin Scully
Bruce Springsteen
Cicely Tyson

Jon Weisman of Dodgers Insider confirms that Vin and his wife Sandi will attend the ceremony with Dodger owners Mark Walter and Peter Guber, president/CEO Stan Kasten and executive vice president Lon Rosen.
