Some Wrigleyville bars charging $250 to watch the World Series on TV
World Series tickets in Chicago will cost you a very pretty (perhaps even gorgeous) penny. But let’s say you want to watch the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians play on TV at a bar in Wrigleyville, which is next to Wrigley Field. You should be able to do that for significantly less money, right?
Wrong. Apparently some bars in Wrigleyville are charging up to $250 to get in the door, which is an insane amount of money. At least that price gets you more than just in the door: it also includes food and drinks. What it does not include is a place to sit. So you get buffet food and drinks for the pleasure of standing and watching the World Series while packed like a sardine at a bar. If that’s the atmosphere you’re looking for, then more power to you. I watched Game 4 the 2004 World Series in a bar that was so crowded that it was surely breaking fire code regulations, and it was a blast.
If you want a seat, though? One bar event on eventstand.com is charging $1000 for a table for four on top of the $250 cost of a basic ticket to get into the bar. At least buying a table includes a bottle of vodka and a bottle of champagne.
If that’s not your speed, you can actually take a look at what other bars are offering (and charging) to watch the game in their confines. The website hastickets.com has events for four other bars, and they’re all charging between $200 and $250 for basic tickets and upwards of $500 extra for a reserved table. These prices all seem ridiculously high, but they wouldn’t be charging them if people weren’t going to pay. DNAinfo.com reported that the bar The Cubby Bear was charging $100 per person during the National League Championship Series, and people paid.
Wrigleyville is a big place, though. It has a lot more than four bars. Some may be charging covers, but others aren’t charging anything to watch the game in their space. But no matter where you want to go, be sure to get there early. I have a feeling an enormous amount of people will want to experience Wrigley Field’s first World Series game in 71 years.
