Saints must prepare for letdown 2016 season

The New Orleans Saints are now 2-4. We know when teams are playing at the professional level, they can’t quit. The entire team has to think they have a shot at the championship until they’re mathematically eliminated from contention.

Fans have a different perspective. We’re sure Sean Payton and Drew Brees are encouraging the team to not give up. That’s nice, but us fans can tell this team is going nowhere near the playoffs in 2016.

We’ve seen this since 2014: They cannot finish. Drew Brees may be the NFL’s passing leader in 2016, but the defense is a mess. They allowed the Kansas City Chiefs (21.8 points a game before this match according to ESPN,) to score 27 on them. Nick Fairley took a penalty that gave Drew Brees about 30 seconds to go down the field for a touchdown.

If he didn’t take the penalty, the Saints are probably needing a field goal to force overtime with two minutes left.

But the point is, the Saints can’t finish. They couldn’t stop Oakland in Week 1. Couldn’t score on the Giants in Week 2. Couldn’t stop the Atlanta Falcons to save themselves in Week 3. And now, they couldn’t avoid making mistakes that most other teams don’t make.

The Saints have so much talent on their roster, but it just isn’t meshing. This is disappointing. There have been so many injuries in the secondary, but nobody thought their defense would be by far even worse than last year. I even expected the Saints to finish in the top half in total defense this season.

But now we know their defense isn’t going to change. They haven’t even played Seattle, Denver, Arizona or in Atlanta yet. The Saints are looking at another high draft pick in 2017. If they think otherwise, they’ll be tricking one another.
