Philadelphia Eagles will have receiver choices during free agency

Linked to potential free agent DeSean Jackson for this offseason’s free agency period, the Philadelphia Eagles will need to address their receiving options eventually this spring. Whether it be roster cuts, free agent signings, or receiver drafting, Philadelphia has some work to do this offseason.

One of the first tasks the team must accomplish is to decide who will stay and who will leave. Receivers like Nelson Agholor, Dorial Green-Beckham, and Bryce Treggs must all have decisions made about their future. Considering each of the three were poor this season, that decision could be made all the more easier for Doug Pederson and the front office staff.

However, one player to keep an eye on will be Nelson Agholor. Still under contract for next season, his dead cap space is higher than his current salary cap space. If the team were to release him this offseason, it would cost them more in cap space than keeping him on the roster. Considering that he is still young, the team may continue to try and fix his issues.

Moving on from there, the team progresses into free agency. While the aforementioned DeSean Jackson is a hot favorite to land back with the Eagles, their will be other options for this team. A returning Jackson would deliver the team an injury-prone but explosive number one wide receiver. With Jordan Matthews in the slot, that would leave a spot at the number two spot open.

If the team wants to look elsewhere besides receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft, a number two will need to be found in free agency. Depending on the amount of cap space opened up through renegotiations and roster cuts, the team may be able to afford a rising talent like Kenny Stills or Robert Woods. That is, if their current teams don’t re-sign them first.

However, should team re-sign most of these number two quality players, look for the Eagles to be placed in a bind. Whether or not they want to select a receiver in the first round will rocket to the front of the que. Should players like Woods and Stills re-sign with their current teams, it will be interesting to see what Philadelphia does during the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft.
