Winnipeg Jets rookie sensation Patrik Laine has drawn comparisons with Alex Ovechkin for his goal-scoring prowess. On Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres showed there’s one difference between the two: Ovechkin is usually the one delivering devastating hits, rather than the one taking them.

In the third period, defenseman Jake McCabe stepped up and pulverized Laine as the winger skated through the neutral zone. Laine fell flat on his back, the impact actually making him bounce off the ice.

Mark Scheifele quickly skated over to confront McCabe, and a brief melee ensured.

Rick Jeanneret is a national treasure.

That hit, 5:38 into the third period, ended Laine’s afternoon. Which is a shame, because he already has one of the sickest assists of the season on this Nik Ehlers’ goal:

The Sabres won, 4-3, as the teams had another scrum at the end of the game. We’ll update on Laine’s condition when the Jets update it. Coach Paul Maurice offered no update after the game.
