Winnipeg Jets sniper Patrik Laine fired a shot into his own goal in his team’s 3-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.

In the third period, after Oilers forward Mark Letestu took a shot on Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck while entering the zone, Laine blasted the puck past the netminder who was clearly not ready to make the save on his teammate. It appeared Laine was trying to clear the puck out of harm’s way.

Following the play, Laine skated to the bench with his head down. There, Jets captain Blake Wheeler consoled the dejected Laine.

“Everybody saw what happened,” Laine said after the game, “I don’t know. I just tried to get rid of the puck right away. It was just a bad decision for me and an unfortunate goal.”

The goal, which was scored at the 11:21 mark of the third period, proved to be the game-winner. It was credited to Letestu and was his second of the game.

“He’s 18 years old and he feels terrible. These things happen. I’ve done it many times, it’s just a bad bounce,” Wheeler said. “He’s done a hell of a job for us this year. He’s obviously a huge part of our team and you hate to see a guy have to feel that way after the game.”

The 18-year-old Laine, who was picked No. 2 overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, has been one of the bright spots for the Jets so far this season. He currently ranks third in the NHL with 17 goals and has more points than Auston Matthews – who was selected one spot ahead of Laine.

This was the second time the Jets have lost a game in 2016-17 on an own goal. On Nov. 11, Nikolaj Ehlers shot the puck into his own net by accident in overtime against the Colorado Avalanche.
