Packers to Answer No. 3 Receiver Question Tonight

Coming into 2016, the Green Bay Packers had plenty of questions to sort out in training camp and throughout the preseason. Would Jordy Nelson return healthy? Would Eddie Lacy regain his quickness and shed the weight?

Another question debated by armchair analysts all summer was who would be the Packers number three wide receiver opposite Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb?

The first two questions have been answered. Nelson is off the PUP list and ready to play, and Lacy has looked great in his action so far in preseason.

The third question is also about to be put to rest.

Davante Adams was the logical choice coming into the season, but his miserable 2015 campaign and the emergence of Jeff Janis in the postseason put Adams’ status in question. Add the play of Ty Montgomery before his ankle injury last season, the steady route-running and punt return abilities of Jared Abbrederis and the addition of fifth-round rookie Trevor Davis, Adams was seemingly on thin ice.

Reports began to surface putting not only Adams’ number three receiver status in doubt, but also his spot on the roster at all.

Nobody has that doubt anymore.

Injuries have taken Janis and Montgomery out of the equation to open the season as the number three, and Davis seems destined for the practice squad. The position has come down to a battle between Adams and Abbrederis, who both have vastly outplayed all other receivers in camp. They also, however, have been limited in preseason game action so far, with Abbrederis catching three balls for 26 yards and Adams’ two for 37.

Both players have looked good in practice, with Abbrederis showing more consistency, but Adams is far superior in athletic ability and big-play capability.

Friday night against the 49ers will be the most extensive playing time for either in preseason, as well as for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has yet to take a snap. It may also be their last until week one against Jacksonville.

Adams is definitely the favorite to win the position. A big game from Abbrederis, however, especially if he looks like he has a nice connection with Rodgers, may be enough to win Mike McCarthy over.
