Overtime was winding down and Arizona Coyotes netminder Mike Smith had just denied a couple of Anaheim Duck chances. On his knees, the puck dropped right in front of him. Wanting to get the puck up ice, Smith stood up looking for an option, but as he hesitated Ondrej Kase was ready to pounce.

Seconds later, the game was over and the Ducks were 3-2 winners.

“The way things are going now,” said Smith, one of the NHL’s better puck-handling goalies via the Arizona Republic. “My stick breaks and didn’t get anything on it, and it ends up in the back of the net. Trying to do too much.”

Smith added that while he was looking up ice for someone to get the puck to, the knob of his stick broke.

“When it rains, it pours. When things go bad, it snowballs,” he said. Cory Schneider can totally relate.

The overtime point was Arizona’s first since Dec. 15 and kept them ahead of the Colorado Avalanche, who won in overtime Friday night, for 29th overall in the NHL.
