Lamar Jackson says Johnny Manziel offered him life advice

After winning the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, Louisville quarterback was greeted by many former winners, including former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Jackson told the Dan Patrick Show on Monday that Manziel stopped by his room and offered him some advice on life and being a Heisman winner.

“Johnny Manziel, he was telling me a lot of positive things,” Jackson said. “He told me, ‘Man, have fun in college, you can only stay here a certain amount of time, have fun with it.'”

Sounds like Manziel was a little nostalgic, and who could blame him? Manziel is more of a cautionary tale than a role model. After two stellar seasons at Texas A&M (and one Heisman Trophy win and a finalist appearance), Manziel was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the first round. However, his off-field antics, which included excessive partying and run-ins with the law, hurt Manziel on the field. He reportedly showed up to the Browns facility inebriated and missed mandatory appointments to go gambling in Vegas. He lost the respect of his teammates, coaches, and ultimately lost his job.

And this was all in a two-year span.

So when this photo hit Instagram, the collective college football world was urging Jackson to run the other direction.

But Jackson, who was the youngest player to ever win the Heisman, seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders and a strong support system. He told Dan Patrick that he knew his life was going to change quite a bit after hoisting the bronze statue.

“I’m going to have to be staying in the house a lot more,” Jackson said. “I can’t really go to the store like I want to, like I usually do.”

Perhaps Manziel did give Jackson good advice. Perhaps he told him about how the fame of winning the Heisman ultimately took him down a path that took him out of football. Perhaps, he didn’t offer Jackson a shot of Fireball.

It will be interesting to see how Jackson handles the pressure of being the Heisman winner moving forward, especially since he’ll be the favorite again in 2017.
