Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Michael Johnson in the Works for UFC 205

The main event for the Nov. 12 UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden was announced on Tuesday evening. Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will face featherweight titleholder Conor McGregor at the UFC's inaugural event in New York City. The fight card will feature three world title fights, and UFC president Dana White is working on another marquee fight for the already stacked main card.

During an appearance on SportsCenter on Tuesday, White revealed that he's trying to finalize a fight between top lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov and Michael Johnson.

“I’m also working right now… Khabib was also supposed to get a title fight at 155 pounds. Khabib called and said, ‘I get it, Conor is getting this fight, put me on New York, too.’ He wants to fight Michael Johnson,” he said.

After the Alvarez vs. McGregor fight was announced, Johnson and Nurmagomedov traded barbs on Twitter, ending with both agreeing they wanted the fight.

The undefeated Nurmagomedov last fought in April after being sidelined for two years due to injuries. He was expected to face Alvarez at UFC 205 or UFC 206, but the McGregor bout changed those plans.

Johnson last fought on September 17, scoring a first-round knockout over Dustin Poirier. Following the fight, he requested to be put on the UFC 205 pay-per-view.
