Poor Mikko Kuukka. The JYP defenseman thought he could win a loose puck battle in the defensive zone with HIFK’s Juhamatti Aaltonen and then transition things up ice.

But Kuukka wasn’t expecting Aaltonen to muscle him away and then humiliate the defenseman on his way to a beautiful individual effort for a goal.

Kuukka fails to knock the puck loose after several attempts, but does a good enough job trying to defend Aaltonen, a 9th round pick in 2003 by the St. Louis Blues, that it’s not until just before the goal is scored that he earns a delayed penalty call from the officials.

It was that kind of night for Aaltonen, who picked up a hat trick through two periods. This one was his second goal of the night and shows you why he’s donning the gold helmet as HIFK’s leading scorer.
