Jeff Fisher apparently eyeing getting revenge on Rams with his next job

If we’re being honest, it would be weird if Jeff Fisher didn’t feel he was unfairly fired by the Los Angeles Rams.

Jokes about Fisher aside, his 31-45-1 record with the Rams aside, nobody who reaches that level of their profession is going to freely admit they needed to be let go. And Fisher didn’t sound like someone who agreed with the decision during a short teaser for a pre-game interview with Fox, slated for Sunday.

Still, when asked by Charissa Thompson to explain what he’s looking for with his next job, the answer was kind of humorous.

“I want a chance to play the Rams,” Fisher said, breaking into a smile.

While we can all understand why anyone would want revenge on a team that fired him, the Rams probably gave Fisher more than Fisher ever gave the Rams. He got a reported five-year, $35 million contract when he joined the Rams, and a two-year extension earlier this year. If we assume that extension was tacked onto the end of his five-year deal, was also worth $7 million a year and the Rams paid it off in full, that’s $49 million for 31 wins. He also had so much job security that it became a running joke. Fisher never had a winning season with the Rams and still got a two-year extension before this season.

If anything, maybe the Rams should want a revenge game against him.

“We didn’t win enough games and the organization has a much bigger picture,” Fisher also said in the teaser for the full interview with Thompson. “I don’t think I was ever part of seeing a new stadium.”

Let’s be honest, that last part is a little delusional. If the Rams were winning like the Seattle Seahawks or New England Patriots lately, Fisher would have been the coach when the new Inglewood stadium opens in 2019. Fisher wasn’t fired for some “bigger picture” reason, it was for years of below-average football that featured a mostly unwatchable offense. The Rams didn’t give him an extension just to fire him before it started, a 4-9 record with some ugly losses (and even the wins were mostly ugly) did that. There’s no conspiracy to be found here.

But Fisher is hoping his next job includes a shot at the Rams. That would be entertaining.
