Injury Wrap: Do you believe in Santa Claus, or Adrian Peterson?

Is Adrian Peterson bearing gifts in Week 15?
Is Adrian Peterson bearing gifts in Week 15?

We’re down to the money weeks, the semifinal round in most Fantasy Leagues. Let’s take a good look at the injury report.

• So, Adrian Peterson (knee) is going to play against Indianapolis. He was ineffective for a game and a half, hasn’t dressed since Week 2. The Vikings have the worst run-blocking unit in the league. I would not use Peterson in a fantasy semifinal unless I was completely shellacked at the position, without no other viable options. All of the usual Injury Optimism caveats apply. But if you want some Peterson optimism, you’ll find some here.

• A.J. Green (hamstring) had a limited week and it sounds like he’s not going to go Sunday against Pittsburgh (officially listed as doubtful), though he hasn’t been officially ruled out yet. Again, I’m going to fade this one. If you want some optimism on Green, some of the industry ranks him aggressively. Maybe they’re right. I’m never going to play that way.

• The Jets are apparently going to have Matt Forte be a game-time decision for Saturday’s game against the Dolphins. It’s a shame for the Bilal Powell owners in the crowd, though perhaps Powell will be the featured back either way. Brandon Marshall is listed as questionable, but even at full health, he’s not someone I’d be looking to trust. Robbie Anderson has a nice connection going with Bryce Petty. Meanwhile, Matt Moore will take over for the Dolphins, standing in for injured QB Ryan Tannehill.

• Julio Jones (toe) won’t play against the 49ers; Atlanta realizes there’s no good reason to risk their franchise player in a game against an overmatched opponent. Mohamed Sanu (groin) is expected to return, but if I had to use an Atlanta wide receiver in this game, I’d go for Taylor Gabriel.

• With Michael Floyd no longer on the Arizona roster, J.J. Nelson might see a few more routes and targets (though they’re different types of receivers). Surging tight end Jermaine Gresham (knee) might need a game-day check-in; he was limited in practice the last two days.

• Donte Moncrief (hamstring) won’t play at Minnesota, and the Colts will also be missing key personnel on the offensive line. I have an Andrew Luck/Philip Rivers decision that I probably won’t make until Sunday.

• Michael Thomas (foot) had a full work Friday and is expected to go against the Cardinals.

• Theo Riddick (wrist) is doubtful, which means Dwayne Washington is expected to be the starter against the Giants. Perhaps the Lions will need a more balanced offense this week, because Matthew Stafford is playing through a finger injury. New York’s defense has quietly been outstanding for most of the year.

• Sammy Watkins (foot) should play through his questionable tag. Charles Clay (knee) is also listed as questionable. He might be worth a Sunday check-in, with Cleveland’s lousy defense on the other side. It’s been particularly crummy against tight ends.

• With Darren Sproles dealing with a concussion and Wendell Smallwood on IR, the Eagles might be forced to use Ryan Mathews more than usual. The club did have Jordan Matthews (ankle) and Dorial Green-Beckham (abdomen) at Friday’s practice.

• With Melvin Gordon (hip) out for Week 15, Kenneth Farrow is the nominal starter against Oakland. He’s an ordinary talent, but workload is workload. Scatback Ronnie Hillman is the next option.

• Oakland expects Amari Cooper (shoulder) and Michael Crabtree (finger) to play through their questionable tags. Double check on Sunday, to be safe.

• Cam Newton is dealing with a wonky shoulder, but it would be a shock if he didn’t start against Washington on Monday.

• All context clues point to Ty Montgomery, finally, being the back of choice wit the Packers. James Starks (concussion) isn’t going to play, and Christine Michael is too limited a player — when he’s on the field, you’re practically telling the play to the defense. Cold weather is expected to be an issue at Chicago, which might push some extra work to Montgomery.

• Allen Hurns (hamstring) is out for another week, if you’re gallant enough to talk yourself into Allen Robinson or Marqise Lee.

• Eddie Royal (toe) and Marquess Wilson (foot) won’t play, which thins out the Chicago usage tree a bit. I’m still not touching Alshon Jeffery, given that he’s off a layoff, sucked for three months, and has limited experience with new QB Matt Barkley. The cold weather is also a problem.

• The Browns are rolling out Robert Griffin again, apparently because 0-16 is a goal of the team. Have a blast with the Buffalo defense.
