Hot Stove Digest: Why trading Ian Kinsler will be difficult for Tigers

Welcome to The Stew’s Hot Stove Digest, our daily rundown of MLB news, rumors and gossip for Hot Stove season. Here you’ll find a quick recap of all the day’s action and other fun stuff from around the internet that we think is worth your time.

COMPLICATIONS: The Detroit Tigers are reportedly listening on every player on the roster, including veteran Ian Kinsler. However, actually moving the 34-year-old second baseman could prove difficult, as his contract includes a limited no-trade clause that he doesn’t intend to waive unless he reaches a contract extension with the acquiring team.

Reports on Wednesday suggested the Los Angeles Dodgers could be that team after reaching out to the Tigers about a potential trade involving Kinsler. After moving on from Howie Kendrick and potentially losing Chase Utley in free agency, Kinsler would give the Dodgers stability at the second base position. Kinsler will earn $11M in 2017 under his current contract, and also carries a a $10M club option or $5M buyout for 2018. That money wouldn’t be a problem for the Dodgers, but Kinsler’s extension demands could still be a deal breaker for them and others. [FOX Sports]

THE RACE FOR CESPEDES: It sounds like the market for free agent Yoenis Cespedes is already taking shape and could lead to a resolution at or around the winter meetings. The Mets and three other unidentified teams are reportedly in the mix for the veteran outifleder, who is believed to be seeking a five-year deal worth $100M. [@NYPosts_Mets]

STILL FIGHTING: Johan Santana is looking for one more chance in the big leagues. The veteran left-hander plans to pitch in Venezuela this winter as he attempts to land a contract for the 2017 season. Santana has not appeared in the majors since 2012 after undergoing shoulder surgery before the 2013 season. Santana previously signed minor-league deals with the Orioles (2014) and Blue Jays (2015), but suffered setbacks with his shoulder that cut his bids short. [MLB Daily Dish]

ANOTHER COMEBACK CANDIDATE: Veteran left-hander John Danks is looking for a return to MLB in 2017. The 31-year-old was released by the White Sox back in May after posting a 7.25 ERA over four starts. He did not receive another opportunity in 2016, but between his age and his resume should be able to land a low-cost deal before spring training. [@JonHeyman]

LET’S STAY TOGETHER: The St. Louis Cardinals and star pitcher Carlos Martinez are hopeful to iron out a contract extension this winter. The two sides have reportedly held initial conversations, but the process is expected to be a slow build perhaps leading to an agreement around spring training. [@ChrisCotillo]

CELEBRATION TIME: While the AL Cy Young voting led to controversy, the NL voting led to this epic celebration on Max Scherzer’s boat. [@JamalCollier]

DONE DEAL: The Astros have signed veteran right-hander Charlie Morton to a two-year contract worth $14M guaranteed, plus $5M in incentives. The 33-year-old struggled with injuries last season in Philadelphia, but posted a 3.96 ERA and a 58.2 percent ground-ball rate between 2011-15 with the Pirates. [@Ken_Rosenthal]

VETERAN IN DEMAND: Injuries have limited Derek Holland to 35 total starts over the last three seasons, but that hasn’t limited his market in any way. The Yankees, Pirates and Padres have reportedly reached out to the veteran left-hander, and it’s also reported there’s interest on his side in a return to the Rangers. Wherever he lands, Holland sees his next contract as a “new beginning and fresh start.” [Fort Worth Star-Telegram]

QUITE A CATCH: At least five teams have expressed interest in free agent catcher Jason Castro, and many have already offered the veteran a contract. [@ChrisCotillo]

HIRING NEWS: The Rockies have named Mike Redmond their new bench coach. The former Marlins manager will serve under Bud Black, and it appears he couldn’t be happier for the opportunity. {@Rockies]
