Hot Stove Digest: Tyson Ross is being chased by Rangers, Cubs

HOT RUMOR OF THE DAY: Free-agent pitcher Tyson Ross, who was surprisingly cut loose by the San Diego Padres, has a number of teams interested, but most notably, he met with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers on Wednesday, according to our own Jeff Passan.

ALSO: The Washington Nationals are interested in Ross too, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, but they’re considered longshots at this point. Of note: Ross’ younger brother Joe pitches for the Nats. [@Ken_Rosenthal]

NO-ROD: Many thought A-Rod would attempt a comeback in 2017, but that’s not the case, per his reps. Realizing retirement is better than baseball … or just not getting any interest? [The Stew]

DONE DEAL: The Blue Jays have added pitcher Gavin Floyd on a minor-league deal. Floyd, 33, pitched for the Jays last year, but a shoulder injury ended his season in June. [Yahoo Sports]

R.I.P.: Longtime Cubs scout Stan Zielinski died suddenly Thursday morning. He’d been a scout for 38 years and had been with the Cubs since 2001. Most notably, he helped the Cubs draft and sign Kyle Schwarber. Zielinski was 64. [MLB.com]

STEPPING BACK, BACK, BACK, BACK, BACK: Chris Berman is taking on a new, reduced role at ESPN after the NFL season. This mostly applies to the network’s football coverage, but he won’t be the voice of baseball’s Home Run Derby anymore either. [Shutdown Corner]

FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT: The remedy for a slow day of Hot Stove news and gossip? Photoshop + baseball pics. [Cut4]

ICYMI: The latest installment of our “25-Year-Old Baseball Cards” series is out now, with Orioles manager Buck Showalter. Hey, it’s below this sentence. [The Stew]
