Hot Stove Digest: Could the Yankees trade for Mike Trout?

Welcome to The Stew’s Hot Stove Digest, our daily rundown of MLB news, rumors and gossip for Hot Stove season. Here you’ll find a quick recap of all the day’s action and other fun stuff from around the internet that we think is worth your time.

WILD RUMOR OF THE DAY: Let’s just start today’s Hot Stove Digest with the wildest trade tidbit of the day. Sweeny Murti of WFAN in New York is reporting the Yankees have set themselves up to make a run at Mike Trout, according to an MLB scout. This seems like more of an “if anybody could trade for Trout, the Yankees have the pieces” type of gossip than anything else. This time of the year is all about dreaming and wondering, so go ahead, Yankees fans, dream. [WFAN]

REALITY CHECK OF THE DAY: Because we think it’s important to offer an opposing view here — this salacious bit of Bronx wishful thinking isn’t sourced to anyone necessarily affiliated with either the Yankees or the Angels. If the Angels were going to trade Mike Trout, the Yankees might be able to make an alluring offer, but they’re not the only ones. And the Angels trading Trout — the best player in the game — is a huge IF.

RUMORVILLE: Here’s another juicy one: We know the Tigers are selling and word has it the Washington Nationals are said to have checked on Miguel Cabrera. [@TheReal_DV]

ANOTHER ONE: The Nats interest in trading for Chris Sale continues to seep into the public, as Ken Rosenthal writes, but one rival exec says the White Sox will only move Sale if they “win the deal.” [Fox Sports]

BRAVE NEW WORLD: The Atlanta Braves, as they prepare to open their new stadium, are looking at some of the big fish in the pitching trade market. That includes Sale, as well as Chris Archer and Sonny Gray. [MLB.com]

J.D. TO S.F.? The Giants should be in the market for a big outfield bat and J.D. Martinez would make a lot of sense. So it’s not a huge shocker that they’ve had early talks with the Tigers about a deal. [@JonMorosi]

FOR WHOM THE BELTRAN TOLLS: The best suitors for Carlos Beltran at the moment: Red Sox, Yankees, Astros and Blue Jays. [WEEI]

OFFSEASON ADVENTURE OF THE DAY: Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson was at L.A. Rams practice showing off his hands. [@LindseyThiry]

YO, HOLMES, TO BEL AIR: The Phillies sent Matt Harrison looking for work elsewhere, cutting the ex-Texas Rangers pitcher, whom they acquired in the Cole Hamels trade. Harrison never actually pitched for the Phillies because of injury. In fact, he’s pitched in nine games since 2012. [CSN Philly]

HIRING NEWS: The Astros have hired Alex Cora as their bench coach. Cora, 41, played 14 years in the big leagues as an infielder and is considered a future manager. [Houston Chronicle]

ICYMI: Dave Roberts and Terry Francona won the Manager of the Year awards. [The Stew]
