One of life’s great mysteries was solved in Denmark on Sunday, as it has been discovered that it is possible for a goalkeeper to catch his own goal kick.

FC Midtjylland—the minnows who famously beat Manchester United in the Europa League earlier this year—were playing in blustery conditions at Danish Superliga rivals SønderjyskE when goalkeeper Johan Dahlin lined up to take a goal kick.

Expecting to see his powerful effort land somewhere near the center circle, Dahlin instead watched as an almighty gust of wind changed the trajectory of the ball and blew it right back towards him.

The shot stopper was left with little alternative but to catch his own goal kick. Thankfully, the referee knew the correct protocol in such a bizarre situation and awarded an indirect free kick against the ‘keeper. Which, given the situation, seems a little harsh.

SønderjyskE went on to score the winner 10 minutes later, no doubt because Midtjylland were struggling against mother nature to get it out of their own half.
