Dan Muller says committee is 'idiotic' for leaving out Illinois State

Illinois State head coach Dan Muller had some strong words for the NCAA tournament selection committee after his 27-6 Redbirds were left without a ticket to the Big Dance on Sunday.

“It is idiotic to me,” Muller told reporters.

Illinois State’s strength of schedule wasn’t enough, as it was just 1-2 against the only top-50 RPI team it played, conference rival Wichita State. The Redbirds ended up sharing the regular-season title with Wichita State and falling to the Shockers in the Missouri Valley Conference title game.

Muller also vehemently disagreed with the committee’s decision to hand 30-4 Wichita State a No. 10 seed despite its resume.

“That is ridiculous,” Muller said. “They are one of the 20 best teams in country. The committee clearly has biases, and that is based on one thing only, that’s quality of wins. They have no understanding of scheduling apparently. One of the most frustrating parts is how stupid they are. Teams continue to outperform their seeds. Our league wins every year they get in.”

On Monday morning, Muller took to Twitter to recruit teams to play next season to presumably beef up his Redbirds’ schedule and increase tournament chances.

At the end of the day, Muller’s team didn’t have enough wins to impress the committee so it will have to settle for one of the four No. 1 NIT tournament seeds.
