Taking by the New England Patriots in the second round of the draft (first New England draft pick after losing their first-round due to Deflategate), Cyrus Jones struggled in his rookie year as a New England Patriot. Jones never looked terribly comfortable on the football field in his rookie season, either as a defensive back or as a punt returner, the latter of which he struggled greatly in his duties.

Jones, coming out of the University of Alabama, looked somewhat groomed to be a future New England Patriot. Apart from the obvious connection between Alabama head coach Nick Saban and New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick, Jones is a classic example of a Belichick-ian style player. Somewhat undersized as a defensive back but possessing great versatility and heart, Jones seemed a somewhat obvious choice for Bill Belichick in the draft.

Then there was the actual season for Cyrus Jones and it wasn’t picture perfect by any stretch of the imagination. With limited play on Belichick and Patricia’s defense, Jones never had a breakout moment in the Patriots’ Super Bowl campaign and spent more time watching then playing. The opportunity for Jones to play came primarily as a punt returner in which he struggled mightily. Every return by Cyrus Jones became an adventure in breath holding expecting the worst.

Despite a rocky first season, Jones seems excited for next year. Posting to Instagram, Jones had the following to say about his first year in the NFL and what he hopes to improve on in the future.

“Reflecting back on my rookie season, this was by far one of the most challenging times in my life,” he wrote. “I experienced a lot of pain, disappointment, embarrassment and overall dissatisfaction with myself. But through this time, I learned many lessons that as a man I can say I truly needed to learn..’Failure is another opportunity to begin again more intelligently’ and the things I went through this year made me better and wiser.

“Regardless, I was blessed to be apart of something far greater than myself! I experienced the ultimate measure of success in this game we play…and did it with an even greater group of men and I’ll never take that for granted. I was quickly reminded how much love and respect I have for this sport and also how much it means to so many people. So with that being said#patsnation , in 2017, 24 will be back and ready to work for the best fans in football! #revenge #godstimingnotmine#seeyallinyear2”

Hopes remain incredibly high for Cyrus Jones as he prepares for the second season of his hopefully long career as the New England Patriots’ new number 24.
