Tom Herman will be the next head coach at the University of Texas, according to multiple reports.

Charlie Strong, who has gone 16-21 in three seasons at Texas, was fired Saturday morning, clearing the way in Austin for Herman.

Various media reports had Herman as the primary target at LSU, which moved on from Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher. Baylor also had interest in Herman. However, sources told Yahoo Sports that Texas remained a strong option for Herman, and it appears that is where he will end up.

The first domino fell Saturday morning when LSU interim head coach Ed Orgeron agreed to become the Tigers’ next head coach, according to The Baton Rouge Advocate, ending what could have been a bidding war over Herman between LSU and Texas.

Later, Texas made official that it had parted ways with Strong.

“This is a very difficult day for me, my family and all of the people affected by this decision,” Strong said via a statement. “… I do understand that it comes down to wins and losses, and we have not done our job in that area yet. I accept full responsibility for that, but know in my heart that we accomplished our primary goal, which is to develop young men.”

Herman, 41, has emerged as a rising star in the college football coaching ranks. He served as offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer at Ohio State. It was Herman who coached the offense when the Buckeyes won the national championship in 2011 with their third-string quarterback.

Houston hired Herman two years ago, his first head coaching job. He’s gone 22-4 in his two seasons with the Cougars.

Herman has a history with Texas. He served as a graduate assistant there from 1999-2000 under then-head coach Mack Brown.

With Herman headed to Austin, sources told Yahoo Sports that North Carolina coach Larry Fedora is a prime target for Baylor, where he once worked as a graduate assistant and still has friends and supporters.
