The 3-year-old daughter of BYU running backs coach Reno Mahe has died.

Last Tuesday, Elsie Mahe was found hanging from a mini blind cord in which she had become entangled. Elsie was found by a 4-year-old friend. Mahe’s wife Sunny, a former BYU volleyball player, performed CPR and Elsie was life-flighted to a Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

While there was initial optimism she might recover, Elsie’s condition worsened on Sunday.

“I had hoped that these miracles would preclude the miracle of Elsie’s life being preserved. But her brain is only functioning enough to give her body oxygen and perform very basic functions and those have begun to decline as well,” the family said in a statement.

The family also said it met with an organ donation team.

Tuesday night, in a Facebook post, Sunny Mahe said her daughter had passed away.

Our Elsie girl has officially been released to heaven – at least from a worldly, paperwork stand point. Her second neurological death exam was also positive for brain death.

We feel peace and we are again so grateful for the privilege of being Elsie’s parents. She continues to sprinkle love and hope across the world and I am in awe of the Lord and His marvelous plan for my sweet girl.

We will be working closely with the donation team for the next couple of days, so we have a few days to postpone making funeral plans. But as those dates and decisions are made, we will keep you informed.

Reno Mahe posted a proverb Tuesday afternoon.

Elsie Mahe was one of seven children. During last Saturday’s regular season finale, several BYU players, including punter Jonny Linehan and running back Jamaal Williams, wore pink to honor Elsie Mahe with her favorite color. Williams also gave Reno Mahe the game ball following the 28-10 win against rival Utah State.

Mahe joined the BYU staff last year when Kalani Sitake was hired. Mahe was a running back and wide receiver for the Cougars and spent five seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.

A GoFundMe account was set up by family friend Jeremy Roberts and is currently taking donations.
